About Fant Bio
Fant de Kanter was born in the Dutch town of Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel on October 26, 1969. He studied Printmaking in Utrecht, but after spending a year in Iceland, he decided to become a composer. He studied composition with Daan Manneke and Theo Verbey at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and graduated in 2000. Fant currently writes solo pieces, ensemble pieces, songs, theatre and film music, dance music, pop songs and lyrics.
He has written music for and worked with artists and ensembles, such as Christanne Stotijn, Isabelle van Keulen, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Cello Octet Amsterdam and Liza Ferschtman. He has also written music and songs for various theatrical productions, such as those performed by drama groups 'Maccus' and 'Huis aan de Amstel'.
With 'Het Paleis voor Volksvlijt', the musical drama group Fant founded with friends, he produced two performances for 'De Parade', a travelling theatre festival held in the Netherlands every year. Fant even took part in some of the performances himself, as an actor / musician. Since then he has maintained a close working relationship with text editor Enne Koens.
'The music I'm currently writing is the result of a wide range of musical influences becoming more and more intertwined. In broad terms, these are the classical structures we are familiar with, on the one hand, and the beat and intensity of pop music, on the other. This means that the boundaries between genres are gradually dissolving in my music and it is born from the idea that music is a whole. I call this composing by intuition.’
